Compare the Ford Escapeto the Chevy Equinox and Mazda CX-5

Compact SUVs are a hot commodity for Souderton shoppers, but they'll quickly find what makes the Ford Escape the most enticing crossover.

Plenty of powertrains - including hybrid and plug-in hybrid - are available. The new Ford Escape also offers superb ride quality, ample space for its size, a captivating design, and plenty of advanced safety and tech features. It's also fuel efficient, making it great for commuting from Souderton to Sellersville and back.

But how does the Ford Escape stack up against its top competitors like the Chevy Equinox and Mazda CX-5? Ciocca Ford of Souderton breaks down these compact SUVs so you can see how the Ford Escape excels and is a better buy than its rival crossovers.

Ford Escape vs Chevy Equinox

The Chevy Equinox earns a respectable 26/31 (city/highway) miles per gallon, while the Ford Escape earns 28/34 miles per gallon. The Ford Escape is even more fuel efficient when Souderton drivers opt for its hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrain. Ford Escape Hybrid models earn 44/37 miles per gallon while the Ford Escape PHEV has an all-electric range of 37 miles and is rated for 100 MPGe.

No hybrid powertrains are available on the Equinox, which offers only one engine, a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 producing 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. The Ford Escape's base engine - a 1.5-liter EcoBoost® turbocharged inline-3 - outputs 181 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque, while a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine, rated for 250 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, is available. The Ford Escape's hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain, a 2.5-liter inline-4 iVCT Atkinson with an 88-kW electric motor combines to produce 200 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque.

Both compact SUVs seat five passengers and have spacious cabins. The Equinox offers 29.9 cubic feet of storage and a total cargo capacity of 63.9 cubic feet, falling short of the Ford Escape's generous cargo figures. The Ford Escape, which showcases sliding second-row seats, offers 40.7 inches of second-row legroom, 37.5 cubic feet of storage, and a total cargo capacity of 65.4 cubic feet.

For entertainment, the Ford Escape is a gem showcasing plenty of available technology, including a B&O 10-speaker sound system, wireless charging, SYNC® 3 infotainment system, Ford Pass™ Connect with a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot for 10 devices, voice recognition, Bluetooth, Alexa, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The Chevy Equinox counters with the standard Chevrolet Infotainment 3 System and standard wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. Alexa and a Wi-Fi hotspot are available, similar to the Ford Escape.

Ford Escape vs Mazda CX-5

Compared to the Escape's 28/34 rating, the Mazda CX-5 has lower fuel economy ratings of 25/31 miles per gallon. The Mazda CX-5 also fails to offer a hybrid powertrain, though there is the option between a 2.5-liter inline-4 producing 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque or a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine achieving 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. The Escape's base EcoBoost® 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-3 engine, rated for 181 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque, mirrors the Mazda CX-5's base engine. While the Mazda CX-5's turbocharged engine is more robust than the Escape's turbocharged option, Ford's compact SUV offers an efficient hybrid powertrain.

The Mazda CX-5 offers standard Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ that's paired with a 10.25-inch touchscreen, bigger than the Escape's 8-inch display. A Bose 10-speaker audio system is available, similar to the Escape's Bang & Olufsen 10-speaker premium sound system.

Both SUVs have standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a similar cruise control system, and a similar lane assist system, but the Ford Escape offers more standard driver-assist technology, including Evasive Steering Assist and Active Park Assist 2.0.

The Mazda CX-5, offering 31 cubic feet of storage and a total of 59 cubic feet, can't top the Ford Escape's respective figures of 37.5 and 65.4 cubic feet.
